Private Residence Location: New York Completed: 2024 Area: 1095 SF
A vision that began with the client’s painting of three angels gliding over a forest and a question: where might one of them live?
Gaiaย answers this question through natural materials, layered textiles, and a color palette inspired by what the angel would’ve seen during its flight. Brazilian cherrywood, alpaca wool, marble, and hammered metal create a sensual interior that at once feels grounded and otherworldly.
Working within the existing layout, the design introduces a series of architectural interventions tailored to the client, including a new powder room.
The private quarters were approached as a sequence between the bedroom, the dressing area, and bathroom. Sliding doors in the bedroom double as artwork, opening to reveal the new boudoir featuring a walk-in closet. The boudoir becomes a ritual place between the bed and bath to prepare for the day – or for the guest who might be waiting.
Elsewhere, a movable Japanese byobu separates the living and dining areas, while the cocooned kitchen rebels against popular open floor plans. Custom furniture and architectural elements throughout the residence further reinforce the idea of a home designed around the rituals of its inhabitant.
The result is a retreat that feels like a castle in the clouds, right here on Earth.
